Let's begin #ForeverHomeFriday with a story...

Us: David (longtime Pyrent and volunteer), can you transport this adorable juvenile male named George to the rescue?

David: Sure!

David (after meeting George): Uh...George won't be coming to the rescue... 😂🤣🥰

Congrats to David and Carla on adopting their 10th Pyr!

There's hope for peace on earth, y'all!

#CGPRAlum Waffle has won over Kessa the cat. When Waffle moved into her #FureverHome, Kessa tried to bite her. Perhaps because Waffle tried to sit on her. There was mutual distrust. 🤣😆

We were happy to receive the pupdate that these two girls with big personalities have learned to coexist!

If you are looking to adopt your cat's BFF (that's best fluffy friend), read about our adoption process and fill out an application to schedule a meet-and-greet at carolinapyrrescue.com.

We are SO happy to share that Ed, who came to us from a shelter partner last week, tested negative for heartworms. Thank dog! We are currently treating THREE other Pyrs for heartworms!

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month, and just like we do when we take in a heartworm-positive Pyr, we want to remind Pyrents to give that monthly preventative!

Heartworms are transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Many regions of the Carolinas are warm enough that mosquitos are a year-round reality. If skeeters are bugging you, your dog can be bit by an infected one.

Once the worms begin to reproduce, they cause heart failure and damage the dog's lungs. It takes about six months for worms to reach maturity.

So far in 2026, *NINE* of the dogs we have placed or are currently caring for came to us positive for heartworms. That's about 15% of our dogs. Heartworm treatment is our single largest veterinary expense each year -- just over $1,000 a dog adds up!

In our rescue networks, we console each other that the sad reality is that heartworm-positive dogs are more and more common each year. Misery loves company?! We have been doing this long enough to remember when being asked to take in a heartworm-positive Pyr was rare. Fifteen years ago, we rarely did, and Pyrs who tested positive were most often a neglected dog from the eastern regions of the Carolinas where winters are warmer.

We now take in heartworm-positive dogs from throughout the Carolinas, including the mountains. Many of these dogs don't show signs of neglect or aren't in poor shape. Sometimes they are dogs who simply enjoyed time in a yard and were surrendered by an owner who didn't provide monthly preventative.

Treatment stresses dogs and strains the rescue's resources. It includes a three-month protocol that begins with antibiotics followed by injections of immiticide administered in the lumbar muscles. We provide an oral steroid to reduce inflammation. We limit the dog's activity for 2 to 3 months. They commonly feel like crap.

We have treated hundreds of Pyrs for heartworms. Shannon (the president of the rescue) and Alexis (the Pyrs' vet) have it down.
