There's no end to the need for intake these days. We place some floofs in loving homes, and we take in some floofs who need homes!

Meet Monique! This silly, sweet girl will be ready to leave us in early May after we have completed her vetting. To meet her or any of the wonderful dogs in our care, visit carolinapyrrescue.com to read about our placement process and fill out an application to schedule a meet-and-greet.

Thanks for likes and shares!

Should we rebrand as Carolina Great Pyrenees and Kuvasz Rescue? Wait until you read this story?!

Last week, a county shelter here in the Carolinas contacted us with an urgent request. Could we take in a sweet, healthy young male who would be euthanized that day for lack of space? Sebastian's owner had died, and he was dropped off by a family member at a full shelter.

In most counties across the Carolinas, shelters are required to care for stray dogs for several days in case an owner is looking to reclaim them. Most county shelters are *not* required to care for dogs surrendered to them as unwanted for any reason, and so when shelters are full, those dogs are the first to be euthanized. This is especially true for large breeds that are hard to place, like Pyrs.

It doesn't matter if the dogs are healthy, social, and adoptable. Our pet overpopulation crisis is such that there are more dogs than kennels at shelters and furever homes. This shelter worker was trying to find a way out for Sebastian. This happens all the time: even without resources enough, people in those shelters are advocating heroically for dogs.

Shannon looked at the pictures and knew Sebastian was not a Pyr but a Kuvasz. He had all of his records, including those from his breeder. "Cousins" to Great Pyrenees, Kuvasz are the livestock guardian dog of Hungary. His coat is the giveaway: Kuvasz have a course coat that is shorter than that of Pyrs. One way to think of it is that they look like they have had the kind of perm grannies in the 1980s got to add volume to their short hair dos or like you just took them out of a cycle in the dryer that left their furs extra floofy! 😂🤣

Kuvasz are much less common in the United States than Pyrs. There aren't many people breeding them, and Shannon had a hunch that this breeder was probably reputable, would be horrified to learn a dog of hers had ended up on death row, and would want him back.

Shannon agreed to make room at our full rescue for Sebastian, and when she called the breeder, it turns out Shannon's hunch was right. Sebastian is going back to Michigan, where he came from!

We can't emphasize enough how important it is to have a plan for your dogs in case you can no longer care for them. Please identify a trustworthy friend or relative who will return your dog to their reputable breeder or rescue or commit to rehoming them, and put that in writing.

Sebastian's story will have a happy ending, but it came close to going the other way. If that shelter worker hadn't advocated for him, or if Shannon hadn't made a space for him, Sebastian's story would have ended tragically.

On a related note, if you are driving to Michigan in the near future and can give Sebastian a ride, please message us!

It was a GOOD day of meet-and-greets!

Speaking of, we owe you one picture from last week, too, so this coming Friday will be a Super Forever Home Friday! (All is fine at the rescue. The volunteer who does makes those graphics was in Vegas this past week. 😆)

Thank you to all who donated to cover the costs of Stanley's heartworm treatment.

The last donation was from Harrison, who wrote, "My wife and I give this donation in memory of our sweet Pyr girl Cass who crossed the rainbow bridge 4/12/26. She was a heartworm survivor at age 5 and lived to 13.5 years. We wish the same for Stanley. Feel better, dear friend and live happily!" What a thoughtful way to honor Cass!

Meet Jack and Shelby!

This bonded pair of two-year-olds is new to rescue.

We may place Jack and Shelby as LGDs. They have been exposed to goats and pigs and are competent guardians. They are NOT chicken-friendly and can't share a pasture or yard with birds. (And now you know why they were surrendered!)

Stay tuned for more information about this adorable pair as we get to know them!

So far, 2026 has a pattern: we have another heartworm positive Pyr in our care!

Stanley, who came to us earlier this month from a county shelter in North Carolina (hint...we named him after the county), has tested positive for heartworms and has begun treatment.

We've raised $350 toward the $1,000 it will cost to cover his veterinary care. We need to raise an additional $650.

Sweet Stanley is a friendly and good boy, but he doesn't have a job or way to pay his bills. Can you help?

Donations large and small, we appreciate them all...and so does Stanley!

You can donate here on Facebook through the button below that is part of this post.

If you prefer, here's a direct link to Stanley's PayPal fundraiser: www.paypal.com/donate?campaign_id=TTRU2Q9LWZMAS

If you prefer Venmo, we are @carolinagreatpyreneesrescue.

If you like to donate via check, please make the check payable to Carolina Great Pyrenees Rescue and send here: Carolina Great Pyrenees Rescue, P.O. Box 504, Marshville, NC 28103.

Thank you for helping Stanley!

We are always glad to help our shelter partners! The Carolinas' public county shelters are the front line of the pet overpopulation crisis, and many staff work hard to get dogs out the door to rescues. Second chances start with them. Support your county's shelter.
