Adoption Policies Overview
The majority of our Pyrs require solid and securely fenced yards to thrive. We occasionally make exceptions for experienced Pyr owners who understand the breed’s strong instinct to roam and commit to keeping the Pyr on-leash when outside. We do not place Pyrs in homes where chains, tie-outs, or underground fencing is used.
We require a positive reference from a veterinarian who can confirm the applicant’s history of providing routine care, particularly regular administration of heartworm prevention and vaccination. We may require additional references for special needs Pyrs or exotic breeds to help us assure a good fit. An experienced Pyr-owner and volunteer may do a home visit, particularly for first-time Pyr owners.
All approved applicants are invited to meet the Pyrs and an officer of the rescue by appointment at the kennels in Indian Trail, NC. Most families bring home their new family member that day. Those who don’t find their match are welcome to visit again. We will help those who appear unready for Pyr ownership find an appropriate rescue to match them with a dog.
Our non-refundable adoption donation is $300 for seniors over eight years old, $400 for adults, $500 for puppies, and $650 for bonded pairs. This includes full vaccination; veterinary care when needed; spay/neuter; heartworm testing and, if necessary, treatment; and professional grooming.

Last week was wild. Because we have placed dogs, we took in seven new Pyrs.
Three need additional veterinary care beyond the basics.
We are raising $6,000 to cover those costs.
Manny, a young adult male from a shelter partner, came in with almost no fur but lots of heartworms.
Walrus, another young adult male from a shelter partner, came in with heartworms, too. Both will need treatment.
Nova, an adult female, has heartworms and will need treatment as well. She also had a gunshot wound to her left front leg and required an emergency amputation.
We will be telling you more about all three of these dogs -- and the other new Pyrs -- but we wanted to establish this fundraiser for them ASAP.
We are so grateful that we can commit to taking in dogs who would have no other chance and know that we can cover their costs.

It is #ThankfulThursday!
We are grateful for the staff and volunteers at county shelters and all-breed rescues across the Carolinas who help Pyrs in their community.
Taylor, who fosters for Watauga Humane Society, reached out to tell us about her delightful foster floof. Jumper Cable (what a great name!) is available for adoption through WHS.
This is how Taylor describes him: "Jumper Cable is a super chill 7-year-old male Great Pyrenees who has no problem making himself right at home! While his backstory isn’t super clear, what is clear is that he enjoys the comforts of a home and some property to patrol.
He is not particularly food motivated, but he is people motivated and loves a good scratch or snuggle session from anyone he meets. While he will happily join on a hike or walk, it’s at his own, lumbering pace with lots of sniffing and meandering. He does well in social settings and gets in the car willingly (but does want to try to ride shotgun!).
Super cuddly, calm and sweet, this gentle boy would be the perfect addition to most homes. He is great with kids of all ages and seems to have little interest in cats, chickens or other small critters around the home or outside. He will require introductions with male dogs but seems to be okay with girl dogs of varying ages and sizes. He was rehomed for wandering so would do best with a large, fenced in yard (like most GPs!).
Jumper deserves to live out his golden years in a comfortable and loving home– could that home be yours?"

He isn't much to look at now, but we promise you that this sweet "pocket" Pyr is going to be a stunning boy when he's had some time and TLC.
Manny came to us from a shelter partner today. He is HW+ -- that much we know.
We also know that he is calm and gentle.
Stay tuned for more information as Manny gets the care he deserves and begins his glow up!

The four frosty paws are ready to leave rescue!
They came to us after being dumped by their breeder at a shelter at about 7 or so weeks old. They have been growing, learning manners...and eating, sleeping, and rumpusing these last two months!
These pups are now four months old, happy, and healthy.
The three boys and one girl should go to separate homes, but each would thrive joining a family with a social adult dog of the opposite sex.
Owners experienced with adults of the breed or guardian breeds preferred.

Carolina Great Pyrenees Rescue is based out of our president’s grooming and boarding facility in Indian Trail, NC, and trained and professional staff care for most of our Pyrs. We rely on a network of experienced foster families to care for Pyrs who are not immediately adoptable.
We need the following:
- Forever homes: The number one way to help us is to adopt a Pyr.
- Donate any of the following items: We sometimes need clean towels, new or gently-used crates, Diamond Natural Lamb and Rice blend kibble, Lysol Clean and Fresh Multipurpose cleaner (the yellow bottle), Tide HE, and paper towels. Please email president@
