Adoption Policies Overview
The majority of our Pyrs require solid and securely fenced yards to thrive. We occasionally make exceptions for experienced Pyr owners who understand the breed’s strong instinct to roam and commit to keeping the Pyr on-leash when outside. We do not place Pyrs in homes where chains, tie-outs, or underground fencing is used.
We require a positive reference from a veterinarian who can confirm the applicant’s history of providing routine care, particularly regular administration of heartworm prevention and vaccination. We may require additional references for special needs Pyrs or exotic breeds to help us assure a good fit. An experienced Pyr-owner and volunteer may do a home visit, particularly for first-time Pyr owners.
All approved applicants are invited to meet the Pyrs and an officer of the rescue by appointment at the kennels in Indian Trail, NC. Most families bring home their new family member that day. Those who don’t find their match are welcome to visit again. We will help those who appear unready for Pyr ownership find an appropriate rescue to match them with a dog.
Our non-refundable adoption donation is $300 for seniors over eight years old, $400 for adults, $500 for puppies, and $650 for bonded pairs. This includes full vaccination; veterinary care when needed; spay/neuter; heartworm testing and, if necessary, treatment; and professional grooming.

Here's handsome Tony! This giant, sweet, and easy-going boy is ready to leave us for his #FureverHome.
Tony came to us from a shelter partner as a stray, and we can't fathom why anyone would let this stunning and sweet boy go.
Tony is everything we love about big ol' male marshmallows.
He would be a great match for a family with kids, a female dog his size, or smaller dogs of either sex.

Darling Hazel and Cora came to us from two different litters. Both pups are Pyrfect! They are silly, sweet, and playful. Why are they still here at the rescue waiting?!

One day after surgery, Momo is walking and wagging her tail!
Momo didn't have use of that leg for many months before her amputation, and she probably feels less pain now than she has in a long time.
Thanks to all who donated to cover her vet bills. We never want to amputate a leg, but this was clearly the right decision for her.

Happy Momo Monday!
We are celebrating that this sweet girl who came in last week is up and about and wagging her tail after having her rear passenger leg amputated this morning.
Shannon said that she has never seen a dog this happy after an amputation. The xrays confirm what we suspected from interacting with her: Momo was in awful pain since being hit by a car many months ago.

Turtle Duck and King Bumi are healing well. We are more hopeful that we can save their legs. The wounds are looking better each day.
Momo will have her amputation on Monday. She has charmed everyone at the rescue and is the sweetest of girls.
Combining donations made here on Facebook and through Venmo, you have raised $3,220 for their care. We expect the costs for Momo, King Bumi, and Turtle Duck to be about $3,500, and so appreciate any additional contributions!

Four years ago this weekend, we took in Merveille, a Pyr so close to death that we weren't sure she would survive.
As you can see, #CGPRAlum Merveille, now Roxie, is healthy and thriving. What a miracle that such an emaciated, filthy dog is now the floofiest of floofs.
We have never hesitated to take in dogs in horrible condition that we think we can help, and we can say "yes" to these complicated, expensive cases because of our pack of care-givers and donors who support the rescue Pyrs.
The world needs all the hope it can get these days. Thank you, for helping us help these dogs. We are making a difference. The Pyrs like Roxie are living reminders to never give up hope.

Carolina Great Pyrenees Rescue is based out of our president’s grooming and boarding facility in Indian Trail, NC, and trained and professional staff care for most of our Pyrs. We rely on a network of experienced foster families to care for Pyrs who are not immediately adoptable.
We need the following:
- Forever homes: The number one way to help us is to adopt a Pyr.
- Donate any of the following items: We sometimes need clean towels, new or gently-used crates, Diamond Natural Lamb and Rice blend kibble, Lysol Clean and Fresh Multipurpose cleaner (the yellow bottle), Tide HE, and paper towels. Please email president@
